Rijeka Clinical Hospital Center was founded on September 3, 1984, by the merger of five hospitals: General Hospital "Braće Dr. Sobol", General Hospital "Dr. Zdravko Kučić", Kantrida Children's Hospital, Kraljevica Orthopedic Hospital and Ičići Clinical Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases. Today it is one of the five clinical hospital centers in Croatia and is the central hospital institution of this part of the Republic of Croatia.
Rijeka Clinical Hospital Center is a teaching and scientific research base of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Studies, Faculty of Dental Medicine and Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Rijeka. Also, within the framework of the partnership agreement with the University of Rijeka, the hospital achieves professional cooperation with the Speech Therapy Center, the Department of Physics and the Center for Micro and Nanosciences and Technologies of the University of Rijeka. KBC Rijeka consists of 18 clinics, 6 clinical institutes, 6 independent institutes, one independent department and a hospital pharmacy operating in three locations, with a total of 3456 employees. Our vision is to unite the Rijeka Clinical Hospital Center in one location, which will significantly improve both the conditions for professional and scientific work, as well as the conditions of stay in the hospital for our patients.

The staff consists of 3,456 employees, of which 493 are doctors in 27 different specialties, 57 doctors from the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, 1,257 nurses, of which 26% are VŠS or VSC graduates, and another 503 employees in other health fields (pharmacists, medical engineers, physiotherapists , psychologists, speech therapists, special education teachers, biologists, physicists, pharmaceutical technicians, laboratory technicians), and 149 residents. Our spatial capacities are: 206,000 m2 of total area, 84,000 m2 of usable area in 46 hospital buildings, 1,069 beds, of which 60 beds in intensive care units, 28 beds in the emergency medical service, 24 surgical rooms, 197 outpatient clinics.
The institutions with which we cooperate are primarily the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka, the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Rijeka, the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Rijeka, the Medical School in Rijeka, the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance, the Teaching Institute for Public Health, the PGŽ Health Center, the for emergency medical assistance, the Lovran Orthopedic Hospital, the Rab Psychiatric Hospital and the Lopača Psychiatric Hospital, and scientific research work consists of research projects and clinical trials through 12 reference centers of the Ministry of Health.
