Not all grass is the same and it’s hard to believe: There are more than 10,000 types of grass and many more types of grass worldwide. For the typical lawn in our gardens, only 5 varieties are usually used in combination. (Do your own research to find out the difference between species and varieties.)
Take a look at what the following varieties look like and find out where they grow and which ones thrive particularly in our climate. Which of these belong in the typical lawn seed selection for gardens in Germany?
Task:
Hopefully you have an area where you can sow lawn. Can you find out what varieties would grow well on it? First, determine whether the soil is alkaline or acidic. You can test this with so-called litmus paper strips, which only cost a few cents. Or you can ask a gardener or hobby gardener you know about the soil.
Once you have the result, compare the growing conditions specified for the commercially available lawn varieties and choose the right mixture.
Now take another look at how Johann sows grass and what technique or movement Johann recommends. Try it yourself. When it comes to caring for your lawn, we wish you good observation skills, an effective plan and a green thumb.
By the way: The litmus paper test provides good guidance. Experienced gardeners can usually tell from the plants in the area whether the soil is acidic or alkaline. Samples are sometimes sent to a laboratory for precise determination.
